The unemployment rate rose to 5.0 per cent in the March quarter from a revised 4.7 per cent in the previous three months, as global recession took its toll.
The Household Labour Force Survey, published today by Statistics New Zealand (SNZ), also showed seasonally adjusted employment fell 1.1 per cent in the quarter.
The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate dropped 0.7 percentage points.
