FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) The European Central Bank says it aims to double the share of management jobs held by women by 2019.
The ECB said Thursday it wanted to raise the proportion of women from 14 percent to 28 percent of senior management jobs and to 35 percent from 17 percent for middle managers.
European Union lawmakers called for change after EU political leaders filled a series of top ECB vacancies with male candidates. None of the 23 members of the bank's governing council 17 of them national central bank heads named by their governments are women. The council sets interest rates for the eurozone and its 331 million people.
The bank's plan focuses on jobs that it can fill itself not the very top jobs filled by governments.
