The Government is dropping a review of Crown Research Institutes (CRI) that may have led to mergers.
Science and Innovation Minister Wayne Mapp told Radio New Zealand the review was off.
"We looked at a range of issues and we just decided that really it was not worth pursuing at this point and the high tech sector was where the primary gains could be made."
However, the Government was expecting a report soon on targeting research at high tech sector which may affect Industrial Research Limited, which conducts scientific research and development in the manufacturing and service sectors.
Labour's David Shearer said 4500 scientists had been worried about the review unnecessarily.
