Comvita's Japan-based operation has become profitable ahead of forecasts, although the bee products company did not give any figures.
Spokesman Scott Coulter said the Japan unit's move into profit was a positive one, especially since the firm started operating there only in 2002.
"Japan has a wealthy consumer population that understands e-based products. It's an ideal market for our product ranges," he said.
The main products sold were manuka honey and the bee-pollen extract propolis.
Coulter said Comvita sought to work with Japanese consumers directly, rather than using complex distribution channels.
