KEY POINTS:
New Zealanders spending their holidays at home or travelling the country on business spent just over $7 billion in the year to June.
That is an increase of almost five per cent on the previous year.
"It is encouraging to see the increase, which seems to be driven more by holidaymakers than business or visiting friends and family", says Bruce Bassett, Ministry of Tourism research manager.
However much of the increase was also driven by higher transport costs related to increased fuel prices.
