New super-fast mobile internet services - which would let users watch movies on smartphones or tablets while on the move - may be launched by Vodafone this week.
It is believed Vodafone, New Zealand's largest mobile company, will make an announcement about 4G mobile services at a media conference in Auckland tomorrow morning.
4G - or fourth generation - mobile internet services can offer users much faster speeds than existing 3G networks.
Telecommunications Users Association head Paul Brislen said as well as downloading mobile data quickly, 4G also lets users upload things such as video files at a fast rate.
If Vodafone was announcing a 4G launch, Brislen said, it could create a "bit of an arms race" among mobile companies.
