Auckland Vodafone customers experienced frustration this morning after a network outage that lasted at least four hours.
Vodafone spokesman Paul Brislen said the problem happened at 5am and lasted until about 9.15am.
He said the problem meant the 3G network went down but customers should have been moved on to the 2G network.
Mr Brislen said that could have caused congestion on the 2G network.
"They've restarted something and that's brought everything back up again," he said.
Mr Brislen said the problem was due to a "piece of hardware somewhere".
He said the problems did not stop text messages from being sent and received.
"We do apologise to our customers but these things can happen with a network," Mr Brislen said.
