A formal investigation into roaming mobile phone rates in Australia and New Zealand has been launched.
Last May, both governments sought views on whether a formal investigation was warranted, and Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce today announced the decision to proceed.
Joyce, along with his Australian counterpart Senator Stephen Conroy, made the announcement at the Korea-Australia-New Zealand Broadband Summit in Tasmania, saying it was a result of last year's consultation and analysis from operators.
"Our view is that, on the basis of the information before us, it is reasonable and appropriate to undertake a full market investigation," Joyce said.
The investigation would be conducted by New Zealand's Ministry of Economic Development and Australia's Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy.
Both governments would release a draft decision outlining their conclusions on the state of competition and their preferred options for action, before their final decision early next year.
