KEY POINTS:
Rumours of a third mobile network continue to circulate.
Most centre around Econet Wireless' bid to build a third generation mobile network, a project which started back in 2000.
It is believed that a cash-rich Hong Kong equity group, General Enterprise Management Services, and Communications Venture Partners are negotiating to take a stake in Econet, according to a report in today's Dominion Post newspaper.
The companies have reportedly been doing due diligence on Econet since before Christmas.
To get going, Econet would need to agree co-location deals with Telecom or Vodafone to put its equipment on existing transmitter towers.
It would also require roaming agreements - under which an established network operator allows a new entrant to make calls over its network.
In the past, Econet has talked to Vodafone about buying some of its 900MHz spectrum, suitable for the launch of a third GSM mobile network, the newspaper reported.
