The Government is seeking feedback on trans-Tasman mobile roaming charges, Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce says.
Mr Joyce today released a discussion document, also released in Australia by his counterpart, which sets out three preliminary conclusions for New Zealanders and Australians mobile roaming users.
It states price transparency appears to be inadequate and consumer awareness of prices seem low; prices appear relatively high; and the features and quality offered are reasonable.
Mr Joyce said it was appropriate to look at the roaming market, given the great volume of roaming traffic between the countries - approximately one million visitors travel annually from one to the other.
"New Zealanders have expressed concern that the prices charged for international mobile roaming, and in particular data charges, are excessive and that pricing transparency and consumer awareness of prices is low - leading to 'bill shock'."
"Trans-Tasman mobile roaming has the potential to bring great benefits, on a personal level for individuals wanting to stay connected, and on an economic level for companies doing business across the Tasman," Mr Joyce said.
"However these benefits will not be fully realised if the market is not functioning efficiently."
Mr Joyce said the government was keen to hear the views of users, the telecommunications industry and interested stakeholders.
Feedback is invited on the discussion document until July 2.
