Telecom's absorption of Gen-i and possibly Computerland may leave Unisys and other systems integrators in a strong position to snare customers who do not want to deal with a local behemoth.
Dinesh Kumar, analyst at IDC Research, said clients might not want to go with Telecom because it was too big.
New Zealanders expected good service, and that might be why the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry chose Unisys as preferred IT infrastructure services provider, spurning long-time supplier Gen-i.
Ministry spokesman Stewart Watson said Unisys offered the best mix of performance, capability and resources.
Gen-i will hand over the systems to Unisys in November.
The ministry recently completed significant upgrades to its IT infrastructure which allows it better communication with other agencies.
The Unisys deal is for three years with an option on a further two years.
