KEY POINTS:
Broadband measurement company Epitiro has been selected by the Commerce Commission to assess the quality of internet in New Zealand.
The telecommunications commissioner Ross Patterson said it was important the commission had robust data to measure the impact of competition in the market.
Measurement of services provided by up to 10 internet service providers will begin in the new year with the first quarterly available in April. Epitiro head Mike Cranna said the company would monitor nationwide service providers as well as strong regional players. Specially configured PCs measured each internet company at secret city locations.
A number of measurements were made to get a fair reflection of an internet provider's service, including web page loading times, data loss and email speed.
