KEY POINTS:
Junior telco Compass Communications can now offer its customers mobile phone calling under a deal signed with Vodafone.
The wholesale agreement, to come into effect in October, lets Compass sign customers to its mobile service using Vodafone's network.
It's the second wholesale customer Vodafone has signed up this week. Orcon announced on Monday it had also reached a deal with the company.
Vodafone chief executive Russell Stanners said the company, which has more deals in the pipeline, was happy to offer wholesale services and get more people on to its network.
"Everyone wants to be on our network ... what it says is 3G GSM is the future."
Compass chief executive Karim Hussona said the deal would mean it could offer customers different "bundles" of fixed and mobile services.
The company could give mobile customers a 0280 number or sign them up with their existing mobile number using the number portability agreement introduced in April.
Mobile connections would also be used to introduce niche products such as eftpos to retailers without the need for a standard phone line.
The company currently offers telecommunications services to business and residential customers as well as data centre services.
In 2005 it bought ISP Wired Country, from Counties Power. The deal included its spectrum rights, fibre and wireless networks and its customer base.
This week's announcements follow agreements signed with Vodafone last year by Compass, Orcon and M2.
