KEY POINTS:
Telecom is expected to try to bolster the industry expertise of its board by announcing today the appointment of Australian telecommunications consultant Ron Spithill as a director.
Spithill, an engineering graduate, spent 43 years working for global network company Alcatel before retiring as executive vice-president and chief marketing officer a year ago.
Today's announcement - as Telecom releases what is expected to be a flat first quarter profit - will see Spithill fill one of the spots vacated by former chairman Rod Deane and director Paul Baines, who resigned in the wake of the Government's decision to force Telecom to open its phone network to competitors last May.
The company is understood to be still searching for an eighth director.
Telecom's leadership came under intense scrutiny following the Government decision and critics said the board, which is dominated by lawyers, did not have enough technical expertise.
New chairman Wayne Boyd - a lawyer - took over as chairman in June after two years on the board.
Telecom is expected to report a first quarter net profit before one-off items of $195 million today, down from $199 million the year before, according to a Reuters poll of five analysts.
The company is also expected to update the market on its strategy for AAPT - its Australian subsidiary which it decided to hold on to after failing to sell it earlier this year. This could include a partnership with junior telcos in Australia.
