Details of a $1.5 billion Government broadband spend-up could be revealed today at a Government-backed technology conference.
Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce takes the stage at the Commerce Commission's "Broadband at a crossroads" conference as speculation mounts over the shape of its fibre-to-the-home plans.
An announcement on how the Government will spend more than a billion dollars earmarked for high speed internet services is expected any day.
However, Joyce could use the opportunity to hose down industry expectations in light of rapidly deteriorating economic conditions.
Behind the scenes the wider telecommunications industry is said to be furiously lobbying Joyce and his colleagues, Infrastructure Minister Bill English and Prime Minister John Key.
The three major telcos - Telecom, Vodafone and TelstraClear - publicly released a report last Saturday imploring the Government to not undercut their own investment plans.
On the other hand, lines company Vector has put its hand up for broadband network investment cash.
