Foodstuffs supermarkets have used 45 million fewer plastic bags to pack shopping over the past two years.
Executive manager Melissa Hodd said plastic bag use was cut by 16 million bags in the first year and 29 million in the second.
She said 23 per cent less plastic was being used for bags, which were also lighter - a saving of 679 tonnes a year. Pak'n Save, New World and Four Square stores form the Foodstuffs chain.
