Seasonally adjusted electronic card transactions rose 1.0 per cent in the retail industries in April, Statistics New Zealand said yesterday.
The core retail electronic card transaction series showed a 1.2 per cent seasonally adjusted increase.
There were 77 million electronic card transactions with New Zealand-based merchants in April 2007, with a value of $4.4 billion.
The number of transactions was up 10 per cent from last year and the total value up 7.3 per cent.
However, seasonally adjusted, the number was up only 0.1 per cent on March.
There were 910 million electronic transactions for the year ended April, with a value of $53.3 billion, up from $837 million transactions with a value of $48.5 billion for the April 2006 year.
The mean value of each transaction in April was $58. It was $59 for March.
For the year ended April 2007, debit transactions made up 56 per cent of all electronic transactions by value. This ratio of debit to credit transactions by value has remained stable since the beginning of the series in October 2002.
The mean value of transactions per person for the year ended March 2007 was $12,332, 8.5 per cent higher than for the previous March year.
