Christmas Eve continues to claim its title as the biggest shopping day of the year, despite wet weather in some parts of the country.
The last-minute shopping rush isn't over yet, but as of 1pm Paymark has reported that Kiwis have already spent more than $147 million at the tills.
At 12.21pm today, Paymark recorded a peak of 157.46 transactions a second, up slightly from last year's peak of 156.13 transactions, although today's figures showed an overall lower spend.
This represents a new record for the number of transactions a second the Paymark network has processed, CEO Mark Rushworth said.
"Each year Christmas Eve gives us a good workout. Throughout the year we typically see 50 to 60 transactions per second and during December we saw that average figure creep up into the 115-120 range, but this is a new record for us."
