KEY POINTS:
How would you describe last year for Pumpkin Patch?
It was another good year, with difficult trading conditions in New Zealand and Australia but with great opportunities in the United States.
What was your company's greatest achievement?
I think it has been our expansion in the US, which is being done methodically and carefully.
And the greatest disappointment?
Probably the trading conditions in Australia.
What do you think this year will bring for Pumpkin Patch?
International opportunities.
What will be the major challenges for Pumpkin Patch this year?
The high value of the currency, particularly in the Australia and New Zealand cross.
What do you expect from the economy this year?
I think the basics seem sound but I am worried about the high official cash rate and high currency costs.
What was the most interesting business story of last year?
It is not really a business story. I suppose, but it is a trend that is showing up. It is the continued rise of Australian private equity interest in New Zealand business.
Who was your mentor? What did they teach you?
I've had several. One who springs to mind is Dennis Pickup from my time at Lion Nathan. He was my chief executive when I was general manager of the convenience liquor group.
The key things from Dennis were keeping focused on what is very important and making sure you can back up your position with unshakable facts.
