Shoppers are being warned not to be sucked in by retail sales before next week's GST rise.
Retail and shopper behaviour expert at the Auckland University of Technology Andrew Parsons said it would be silly for shoppers to spend unnecessarily just to avoid a GST rise of 2.5 per cent.
A saving of $25 for every thousand dollars spent was not a reason to make a non-essential purchase.
Parsons said sales in all forms would continue past Christmas.
