Australian consumers continue to buy new digital cameras, televisions and personal computers in large quantities as their desire for the latest technology outweighs economic gloom.
Australians bought 6.56 million digital devices in the first six months of the year worth A$2.8 billion ($3.6 billion), according to a survey commissioned by consumer electronics giant Canon.
The latest Canon Consumer Digital Lifestyle Index said the number of units sold was slightly higher than a year earlier, and prices were 14 per cent lower on average.
Canon Australia director of consumer imaging Jason McLean said consumer spending was driven by the desire to upgrade digital devices and embed the latest technology in more aspects of daily life.
Upgrades accounted for 44 per cent of camera purchases, 40 per cent of televisions and 39 per cent of personal computers.
