KEY POINTS:
Fairfax New Zealand is investing $7 million on the Petone-based printing press that broke down overnight, delaying the distribution of DominionPost newspapers in the Wellington area.
DomPost general manager Paul Elenio said the breakdown was serious in that printing finished about three and a half hours later than normal. But the financial impact was not material.
The folder, a major component of the press, broke down and it took several hours to remove it and switch to a spare. Printing was finished at 8.45am instead of 4.30am.
"It costs us more money in that we have to pay delivery contractors more because we are keeping them on the job for longer," he said. The folder will be fixed today, he said.
The press at Petone is 17 years old. He said the company is investing $7 million on extending it.
The investment will give the press more capacity and more colour. There will also be an ability to do maintenance while the press is running.
The extension will be operating by the middle of next year.
