KEY POINTS:
NEW YORK - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has joined the Chandler family in its bid to buy newspaper and TV station owner Tribune.
A source said News Corp's participation was small with Murdoch's goal being primarily to cut printing and back-office costs at his money-losing New York Post tabloid newspaper.
News Corp is restricted from buying Tribune's Newsday outright as United States media ownership laws prevent the company from owning another newspaper in the New York region.
Tribune has received three bids in all and is in the process of reviewing them.
