Journalists at Fairfax owned papers the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age are on strike following news the media company will slash 25 per cent of its metropolitan staff.
Sydney Morning Herald reporter Lisa Visentin tweeted that the staff have voted for a seven day strike which will mean they will not report on the Government budget for 2017.
The 25 per cent cut is estimated to affect 125 full-time jobs.
The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance has slammed the move, saying it is "appalled" and the decision will weaken Fairfax's business.
Fairfax journalists on Twitter say Australia's oldest publisher is offering voluntary redundancies at its metro publishing business, which includes masthead titles The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
The event is described as a series of aggressive sales pitches.
