Australian Fairfax staff are now on strike following the announcement 120 editorial jobs will be cut from newsrooms in Sydney and Melbourne.
Sports reporter Dominic Bossi tweeted "Editorial staff @smh are on strike until Monday after another 120 job losses! Support us and support quality journalism #fairgofairfax".
Stephanie Peatling posted a photo of an empty newsroom at the Canberra bureau of The Age.
Fairfax will make cuts to the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Financial Review through redundancies and cost-cutting measures, according to one of its journalists.
"We will shortly enter a consultation period with staff and the MEAA (media union) on a proposal to reduce costs across News and Business in the Sydney and Melbourne newsrooms by the equivalent of 120 full-time employees," Fairfax Media editorial director Sean Alymer told staff via email on Thursday morning, according to Mumbrella.
The Australian media union has vowed to fight for every job following the announcement.
Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance CEO Paul Murphy said the union would respond accordingly.
"We will fight for every job," Mr Murphy said in a tweet.
"Worried for my own future and my colleagues, but this is also just a terrible day for journalism and media diversity in Australia," tweeted Sunday Age journalist Jill Stark.
