KEY POINTS:
Auckland-based company Europlan Industries has launched a new range of mobile filing cabinets, or tambours, which the company says will be fully recyclable.
A manufacturer and exporter of office furniture and filing products, Europlan today said it would take the tambours back for recycling once their owners had finished with them.
The key to recycling the new Verde (Italian for green) tambours, being made at the company's New Lynn factory, went back to their manufacture, Europlan said.
They featured the use of galvanised steel, which lasted longer than cold-rolled steel and did not need chemical washing.
The new product also used polypropylene instead of PVC, involving less use of chemicals, as well as being easily recycled and not producing toxic fumes.
Other factors included the use of fully recyclable aluminium slats and reusable locking mechanisms.
Europlan said the new tambour was part of its commitment to the environment, with audits of its processes to minimise waste and reduce energy costs resulting in 30 per cent lower electricity and gas usage last year.
Managing director Paul van Dorsten said the approach was paying off, with many organisations across the private and local and central government sectors having now adopted environmental purchasing guidelines.
