Four years ago, Grant Elliott ran a consultancy while completing his PhD in electronics and looked at design and cost problems for the outdoor screens used at sports stadiums and big events.
With backing from financiers FR Partners, his Day One Digital Media company has created a lighter screen that is more moisture resilient and with a better picture.
Seven screens have been sold to sites that include Ellerslie Racecourse, Ericsson Stadium and the Viaduct Basin, for America's Cup racing.
The company employs 20 people and makes the screens at purpose-built facilities on the North Shore. Now Day One will be launched into Australia, Europe and the United States.
Elliott says that, when developing the project, he wanted hardware as well as software components to increase the barriers for entry from competition.
