Crude oil prices in New York rose to $US36 a barrel - the highest since the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait - before settling at $US35.92 at the close of trading at the weekend.
Analysts cited new tensions between Kuwait and Iraq and the threat of a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico for the price rise.
