KEY POINTS:
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare has introduced the first of a range of "smart" flow generators intended for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
The SleepStyle(TM) auto-adjusting flow generator automatically detected interruptions to normal breathing and provided the appropriate positive airway pressure to meet the breath-by-breath needs of the patient, Healthcare said today.
The new device was the first to include the company's SensAwake technology, which sensed when the patient was awake and promptly reduced the delivered pressure to facilitate a return to sleep.
The SleepStyle flow generator range would be introduced in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe initially, followed by the United States once FDA clearance was received.
Several additional devices incorporating the new technology were expected to be introduced in the next two years.
Healthcare managing director Michael Daniell said the new technologies would offer significant benefits for OSA treatment, with enhanced comfort, acceptance and patient management.
Healthcare shares were up 1c to $3.39 in late morning trade.
