An internet company that shares its name with the controversial app Uber is embroiled in a trademark stoush with the global giant.
Uber Group, a Whangarei internet provider, said a recent "wave of negative publicity" about the private car hire company was confusing customers and rubbing off on their brand.
"Their presence is now really starting to cause us concern because of the number of inquiries and complaints that we have to redirect," said Pauline Rose, corporate services manager.
Last week it was revealed at least two Uber drivers were facing charges amid a crackdown that led to Auckland DJ Tim Phin being kicked out of his cab.
Despite the controversy the company has established itself in 53 countries. It now operates in Auckland and Wellington and applied for the trademark in New Zealand shortly after launching.
