Auckland Mayor Len Brown has told Ports of Auckland and the Maritime Union to end 15 months of industrial strife on the city's wharves and accept the recommendations of a facilitator.
The port management and union are due to receive the recommendations in the next two to three weeks following six months of talks with a facilitator for the Employment Relations Authority.
Yesterday, Mr Brown wrote to the parties to "reinforce my strong expectation" that the industrial be finally resolved.
"Aucklanders do not want to see more disruption on the waterfront and especially not as we move into the Christmas period and a New Year. The dispute has dragged on too long," he said.
The left-leaning mayor, who has gone to pains not to take sides in the dispute, reiterated that Auckland needed a modern, flexible and efficient port that was sustainable and fair in terms of staff needs.
