Pair face hundreds of charges over roading work paid for but allegedly never done.
Two men were back in court today facing more 300 charges relating to defrauding the former North Shore City Council of more than $800,000.
Hemant Kumar Maharaj, 57, and Suresh Din, 56, both of Auckland, made a brief appearance in Auckland District Court after previously entering no plea to 73 counts each of using a document with intent to defraud and 78 each of dishonestly using a document, laid by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
Judge Charles Blackie today remanded the men on bail until March 2 for a plea inquiry hearing, allowing the SFO time to file formal written statements.
Both were told to surrender their passports and not to apply for any travel documents.
The SFO alleges Maharaj, who worked for the council, and Din used 151 invoices in a dishonest scheme to obtain more than $840,000 from the local authority over 10 years.
Maharaj also faces two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice and Din one of using a document with intent to defraud and six counts of dishonestly using a document in relation to income tax returns.
