Our regional port chiefs love their industry and pick areas of personal interest for jobs they dream of.
Ports of Auckland chief Geoff Vazey says his workplace is on a beautiful harbour and at the doorstep of the Auckland central business district.
His dream job, other than the one he actually has, would be in the racing industry. "Working in the thoroughbred racing field in a position where it was possible to take up the challenge of improving the financial state of the industry has appeal.
"It wouldn't be easy to achieve the desired outcomes, but that is part of the appeal," he said. Vazey breeds thoroughbreds as a hobby, which he has called "a dreamer's game".
Jon Mayson's Port of Tauranga office has a water view too, and is within strolling distance of Mt Maunganui.
The former harbour pilot and merchant seaman loves his current job. He said if he had to pick another one it would be something that made a real difference.
"It would be great to give something back to the community," he said. Would that be politics? Don't mention that, he said.
