Z Energy moves to Fly Buys instant discounts

Z Energy is rolling out a new scheme allowing Fly Buys members to get instant discounts at its petrol stations.

From August, nearly 2.5 million Fly Buys users will be able to get instant fuel discounts on selected days and still collect Fly Buys points, by presenting their card at around 220 Z sites.

Details of the per litre discounts won't be public until the scheme - 'Fly Buys Pumped' - goes live on August 1.

Z's general manager of marketing, Jane Anthony, said combining Fly Buys with direct fuel discounts was in response to customer demand.

"The old paper-based supermarket dockets have been dwindling in popularity, with people telling us they want instant fuel discounts instead. We've listened to customers and taken the opportunity to boost New Zealand's leading loyalty offer with a fast, efficient discount mechanism."

She said loyalty offers were going through a period of significant change and customers were wanting more choices.

• Meanwhile, BP is close to launching the 'BPMe' phone app, which it says will allow customers to pay for fuel purchases from their car rather than swiping cards at the pump or queueing in the service station. The app will also record fuel purchases, remember regular fill-ups and allow purchases from BP's on-site cafes.

BP and Caltex continue to offer supermarket docket discounts through Progressive Enterprises, while Mobil has a supermarket docket tie-up with the Foodstuffs supermarket brands New World and Pak'n'Save.

In the complex world of fuel loyalty schemes, both Caltex and BP also offer loyalty points through the Automobile Association's AA Smartfuel programme.
