The proposed new White Hills wind farm near Lumsden has been awarded emission units worth $10.6 million on the international market, the Government said today.
Pete Hodgson, the minister in charge of climate policy, said Meridian Energy's project for 29 wind turbines would save many tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Emission units are awarded under the international Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases.
They are given to projects which help reduce emissions, and are worth $15 each.
The White Hills project has been awarded 710,000 units.
Mr Hodgson said the wind farm would produce power for about 25,000 homes.
