Mighty River Power is trying to make the numbers work on a planned wind farm at Turitea, east of Palmerston North, after getting the nod for fewer turbines than it wants.
A board of inquiry has issued a draft determination allowing resource consents for 61 turbines, fewer than the 105 the company wants to build.
The smaller scale would adversely affect the project's economics, said Mark Trigg, general manager for development at Mighty River Power. He said the company would work through the detail of the decision and await the board's final verdict.
