Terrace mine closes

Reefton's Terrace underground coal mine on the West Coast closed yesterday, a century after it first opened.

Owner Solid Energy said in April that Terrace was no longer viable and would end production this month.

Six of the 18 staff had already transferred to Spring Creek mine, 45 minutes' drive away, South Island operations manager Simon Doig said.
