Solid Energy, the country's biggest coal miner, has agreed to buy the New Vale mine as part of a plan to expand its brown coal output from the country's Southland region.
Closely held New Vale Coal produces more than 200,000 tonnes of coal a year. No price was disclosed for the purchase, which was subject to clearance by the Commerce Commission, Government-owned Solid Energy said in a statement.
