KEY POINTS:
NZX-listed company Widespread Energy is applying for a petroleum exploration permit for an area off the West Coast.
The company wants to explore more than 3,000 square kilometres between Hokitika and Punakaiki. A permit is not expected to be granted for another three to six months.
It is Widespread Energy's second exploration initiative in the West Coast region.
Earlier this year, the company was successful with an application covering the Kotuku structure north of Lake Brunner.
