Mercury Energy and Sovereign will team up in a pioneering electric car programme.
The companies will launch the scheme today in what the life insurer says will become the first company in New Zealand to buy the world's first mass-produced, fully electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF. Sovereign plans to use it as a company pool car.
A charging station has been installed at Sovereign's head office on the North Shore. Mercury has developed a package for LEAF buyers.
Mercury's general manager James Munro said the cost of electricity for the commute from Takapuna to Auckland's CBD could be as low as $20 a month.
