Royal Dutch Shell, American refining specialist UOP and construction-design contractor WorleyParsons Services have begun a $25 million engineering and design study for expanding the Marsden Pt oil refinery in Northland.
NZ Refining, which owns and operates the refinery, is starting on a three-year, $500 million expansion of the facility.
If the study proves the project feasible, the Marsden Pt facility could increase its intake by 20 per cent from its present 100,000 barrels a day of crude oil, industry journal Oil and Gas News reports on its website.
