Petrol prices at six Gull outlets have dropped 0.1 cent under the $2 threshhold.
The fuel company said the new $1.999 price for regular grade petrol would apply at its unmanned stations, where motorists can fill up on a self-serve system using a credit or debit card.
Gull general manager Dave Bodger said the low cost stores - located in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Taupo and Palmerston North - allowed them to offer a sub-$2 price.
"This low cost offering enables us to deliver significant savings to motorists who do not want to use a convenience store.
"Most motorists still do want the traditional service station set up... but for those in hurry or looking for exceptional fuel value these self serve outlets are ideal."
Other major petrol retailers including BP and Z Energy, which owns the Shell stores, are selling 91 Unleaded petrol for $205.9 cents per litre.
