The company which owns 25 per cent of the wrecked oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is expanding its operations off the New Zealand coast in what is seen as a major boost to exploration here.
Anadarko NZ has taken a 45 per cent stake in a consortium which has a licence to explore 33,000 sq km in deepwater off the Taranaki coast.
Other members of the consortium are Hyundai Hysco, AWE New Zealand, Global Resource Holdings and Colorado-based oil man Randall C Thompson.
It is believed the consortium plans to shoot 5500km of 2D seismic during the next three months and will make a decision on drilling by next April as part of a five-year work programme.
The Deepwater Taranaki delta is 130km long, 100km wide and 2km to 3km thick. It overlies a further 3km-thick layer of rocks, probably containing organically rich sediments.
