Power retailer Genesis Energy is offering new and existing customers the opportunity to get unlimited access to the internet at $9.95 a month.
Infogen officially launches on Monday, although the site is already live. Genesis sells electricity in Northland, the Auckland region, Manawatu, Taranaki, Wanganui and Wairarapa.
While convergence of utility services has been tipped as a future trend, Genesis is the first power company to go into the internet service provider business.
Telephone company Newcall Communications has an energy reseller, Energy Options Limited, and an internet service provider, Iprolink, under its umbrella, and cross-sells services.
Infogen is a "virtual internet provider," with provision of network services outsourced to NetTel Communications subsidiary MoreNet, which uses Telecom's nationally available IPNet and Global One for a fibre optic international gateway.
Genesis is already encouraging its customers to use the internet to read their own meters and submit results online through its retail website.
