The brightest lights in the world of energy efficiency have been recognised by the Government.
The Government's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority gives out the EnergyWise awards every year to companies and bodies that set an example by introducing more sustainable practices.
The supreme award went to Christchurch City Council for its comprehensive energy programmes, including a 10-year contract to buy energy from a wind turbine to be built at Banks Peninsula.
Hamilton City Council won the public sector award, after spending $412,000 over three years. It is now saving around $318,000 a year from its energy bill.
Authority chief executive Heather Staley said the winners were reaping rewards of putting efficiency ideas into action.
