Mayoral candidate Mark Thomas said many residents could discover their suburb would be "super-sized".
"These changes mean thousands of Auckland home owners will actually 'double-jump' zones from the single house zone through mixed-house suburban and up to the much more dense mixed-housing urban," he said.
Under the PAUP, over 75 percent of Auckland's residential zoned land would continue to be of one to two storeys, but some areas of Auckland are set to see more intensified housing under the Mixed Housing Urban zones, which allows up to three storeys.
The council's proposed changes to the Terrace Housing and Apartment Buildings zone would allow for five storeys and in a limited number of locations six or seven storeys.
These zones are to be in located within easy walking distance of metropolitan and town centres and the frequent public transport network.
Auckland Councillor for Orakei, Cameron Brewer said the eastern suburbs would be hit hard by the rezoning.
"Glendowie in particular has been hit hard by Auckland Council's intensification measures," he said.
"Roughly seventy per cent of the suburb has been rezoned from single house suburban to mixed housing suburban and up to fifteen per cent is now classed as mixed housing urban where before there was zero.
"This proposed intensification comes at the same time residents are worried that Auckland Transport is set to take away bus services for the eastern suburbs."
Other suburbs affected by the rezoning include Mt Eden, with more land now zoned as Mixed Housing Urban. The amount of single house zones in Remuera has also been reduced.
Many of South Auckland's poorest suburbs are also set to house more people. Intensive terraced housing and apartment blocks of four to six storeys are planned for Otara, Mangere, Manurewa and Clendon Park.
Youth organisation Generation Zero welcomed Auckland Council's release of the updated residential zoning maps.
Spokesman Niko Elsen said Auckland's serious housing shortage had caused rapid house price rises, locking most Aucklanders out of home ownership -- particulary younger residents.
"We need to allow more houses to be built in existing urban areas, as that is where the highest level of demand is. Well designed developments in inner suburbs close to public transport should now be prioritised, as that is the missing housing choice that Aucklanders are calling for," he said.
"As young people, we're looking for housing choices close to where we need to be, and more transport options, such as cycling and public transport, rather than just using our cars. Any policy should be enabling this kind of development rather than pushing young people out to the urban fringe."
Members of the public still have a chance to have their say before rezoning plans are finalised in August next years.
These decisions will be debated in public and the council will publicly notify its decisions.
