Westpac has apologised for sending an email to a customer containing the greeting "Hello Asian".
The email only affected one customer and the word "Asian" was in the place of where the customer's name should have gone.
The reference to Asian appeared in the subject line and in the body of the email. The email read: "Hello Asian" and "Asian, your statements are moving online".
In a statement to the Herald, Westpac spokesman Chris Mirams said the error was regrettable and the bank had apologised to the customer concerned.
"We have looked at how this happened and can confirm no ethnic information is collected in this process and are confident it will not happen again."
