ASB's re-branding of some branches to announce its sponsorship of the All Blacks had some customers scratching their heads.
The bank and New Zealand Rugby made much of the similarities in culture between the two organisations as they revealed a sponsorship deal extending until 2017 and ushering in probably the busiest period in the history of All Black rugby.
Those similarities even extended to branding - the bank yesterday marked the association with a re-branding exercise that might have made a few people at ASB branches think their eyesight was failing.
It wasn't. The bank turned its familiar ASB brand into ABs - shorthand for All Blacks - at several branches throughout the country. Teasing social media messages were sent out, and onlookers saw new signs go up, replacing the normal company brand with the re-arranged ABs letters proclaiming the link to the All Blacks.
ASB also capitalised on the wordplay in a TV commercial starring All Blacks Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock, Cory Jane, Sam Cane, Patrick Tuipolutu joking around with the bank's ASB logo.
