The ANZ Bank plans to cut back its workforce in Australia, according to a union source, but a spokesman for the bank has said there are no plans to reduce staff in New Zealand.
Australian media, quoting the Finance Sector Union, said the bank planned to slash hundreds of jobs in Australia over the next six months as part of an aggressive cost-cutting initiative.
The union had been told by the bank yesterday that it would be cutting jobs, but said customer-facing positions would not be axed.
But ANZ, which counts as New Zealand's biggest bank, said it had no such plans for this country.
"We have no plans for company-wide redundancies in New Zealand in 2012," a local spokesman said.
