KEY POINTS:
The media sector was patchy, despite good gains for News Corp which was up 15 cents to $26.85 and its non-voting scrip, which gained 24 cents to $25.10.
PBL was 11 cents lower at $17.80 and Fairfax edged down one cent to $4.68.
Telstra gained four cents to $4.37 and Singapore Telecommunications gained eights cents to $2.93.
The retailers were strong, as Woolworths put on 50 cents to $28.19, Coles gained 21 cents to $14.25 and Harvey Norman rose nine cents to $4.92.
The most traded stock was the Harrington Group, with 201.93 million shares traded, at a value of $6.95 million.
Preliminary market turnover reached two billion shares, worth $5.75 billion, with 865 stocks up, 399 down and 304 unchanged.
